Abstract

The mammalian body has a highly developed immune system which guards against continuous invading protein attacks and aims at preventing, attenuating or repairing the inflicted damage. It is conceivable that through evolution analogous biological protective systems have been evolved against non-protein attacks. There is emerging evidence that lipid endocannabinoid signaling through cannabinoid 2 (CB₂) receptors may represent an example/part of such a protective system/armamentarium. "

Trial of cannabis withdrawal drug begins [Hemp Forums - Medical Cannabis] : Hemp Embassy

(Blogger's note: I'd like to see the research showing they found that elusive property in cannabis that causes the said addiction - since even its worst critics have to admit NO STUDY has found anything that leads to physical dependence on it.")

Trial of cannabis withdrawal drug begins [Hemp Forums - Medical Cannabis] : Hemp Embassy: "AUSTRALIAN researchers have begun what they say is a world-first study into a drug to manage withdrawal from cannabis.

Trials are underway in Sydney and Newcastle of the drug Sativex, a botanical extract of cannabis administered through a mouth spray.

The Director of the Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre Professor Jan Copeland said there is currently no targeted drug available for regular cannabis users.

"If we can provide evidence that Sativex is useful in this very controlled condition we will then be really ready to test it in community-based studies," Professor Copeland said."

Patent US6630507 - Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants - Google Patents

Patent US6630507 - Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants - Google Patents: "Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidoil, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention. A particular disclosed class of cannabinoids useful as neuroprotective antioxidants is formula (I) wherein the R group is independently selected from the group consisting..."

Retracting a study doesn’t mean its conclusion is false « Drug WarRant

Retracting a study doesn’t mean its conclusion is false « Drug WarRant: "Remember the RAND study that found that crime increased in areas after medical marijuana dispensaries were shut down? RAND made no causality claims, only correlation, yet the results enraged certain political entities, most notably the L.A. city attorney’s office.

After a lot of pressure, RAND retracted the study. In their news release, they said that the reason they voluntarily retracted it was that they “determined the crime data used in the analysis are insufficient to answer the questions targeted by the study.”

They did not find contradictory information, or any reason to necessarily doubt the findings, but rather decided that the amount of data was insufficient to make the conclusions solely based on that data. They claimed they intended to redo the study with more data, but we’ve heard nothing since.

What’s interesting, of course (though not at all surprising) is the way the retraction has been seen by some as a kind of proof that the findings were false – that, in fact, the closing of dispensaries were not followed by an increase in crime."

Pot smoking not tied to middle-age mental decline | Reuters

Pot smoking not tied to middle-age mental decline | Reuters: "(Reuters) - Middle-aged adults whose memories have grown hazy can't blame occasional pot smoking or other light illicit drug use for their forgetfulness, according to a British study, although experts warn heavy, prolonged use could harm mental functions.

The study, carried in the American Journal of Epidemiology, tested the mental function and memory of nearly 9,000 Britons at age 50 and found that those who had used illegal drugs as recently as in their 40s did just as well, or slightly better, on the tests than peers who had never used drugs.

Marijuana was by far the most common indulgence for the participants -- who were surveyed at age 42 about current or past drug use, then tested at age 50 -- with six percent saying they had used it in the past year, while one-quarter said they had ever used it."

Medical Hydroponics Marijuana Price Wars | BigBuds Magazine - Your one source for growing medical marijuana

Medical Hydroponics Marijuana Price Wars | BigBuds Magazine - Your one source for growing medical marijuana: "We talk about medical hydroponics marijuana cultivation as a career choice, and that means talking about marijuana pricing. How much time and money will you spend to grow a pound of medical marijuana, and how much will you be able to sell that pound for?

As with all agricultural commodities, the cost of production and the profit margin for your medical marijuana crops are determined by complex market forces, but for those of us who grow marijuana, the effect of the black market, the laws, and the police add an extra layer of complexity. People growing corn don't have to worry anywhere near as much as we do!"

Handicapping Marijuana Legalization in 2012: California to Win, Place, ... Show? | Legalization Nation: "Registered voters casting ballots in the fall elections of Colorado, Washington, and perhaps California will have a chance to enact historic cannabis legalization in 2012.

A Colorado group said it will file 155,000 signatures with the state Jan. 6 — enough to qualify the group's recreational cannabis legalization and tax initiative for the November ballot. Similarly, a Washington group said Dec. 29 that it filed at least 355,000 signatures to get on the Washington ballot for November.

In California, groups need to turn in 504,760 verified signatures by mid-April. One California legalization group stated it has 10,000 verified signatures, while two other groups that are circulating petitions don't have any signatures to announce."

Medical Marijuana Could Reduce Prescription Drug Overdose Deaths

Medical Marijuana Could Reduce Prescription Drug Overdose Deaths: "Submitted by NORML on Jan 3, 2012
Physicians who prescribe opioid drugs to patients with neuropathy (nerve pain) ought to consider recommending cannabis as an alternative therapy, according to a peer-reviewed paper published online this week in the Harm Reduction Journal.

“There is sufficient evidence of safety and efficacy for the use of (cannabis/cannabinoids) in the treatment of nerve pain relative to opioids,” the commentary states. “In states where medicinal cannabis is legal, physicians who treat neuropathic pain with opioids should evaluate their patients for a trial of cannabis and prescribe it when appropriate prior to using opioids. … Prescribing cannabis in place of opioids for neuropathic pain may reduce the morbidity and mortality rates associated with prescription pain medications and may be an effective harm reduction strategy.”"
