Marijuana Laws Would Ban Employers From Firing Medical Users, Loosen Penalties For Growing: Sacramento Lobbyists Block 'Em - Los Angeles News - The Informer: "You, the people, are in favor of laws that make it easier for medical pot users to keep their jobs and that make growing weed a possible misdemeanor.
But the reality of politics in Sacramento often has little to do with your will. Business lobbyists and police organizations are trying to block two such bills in the state legislature.
And time is running out:
SB 129 by California Sen. Mark Leno would override a state Supreme Court decision that allows employers to test for marijuana and fire even state-legal medical users."

I am an activist for marijuana law reform. Some think automatically that this makes me a criminal by association. That is just one of many warped views out there today. My goal is to educate the public on a grass roots level and to hopefully get a conversation going in the right direction with South Carolina legislature about reforming the marijuana laws for SC. This is step one. Disclaimer: In no way does this blog or myself advocate breaking the law.

Active Duty Cop Blogs About Drug War Anonymously
Active Duty Cop Blogs About Drug War Anonymously: "One such officer has started writing a blog for the group Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. His first piece is posted now and it details why he felt the need to begin speaking out, even if it is behind the shield of anonymity.
For those of us in law enforcement, we are quite sensitive and aware as to the consequences of publicly joining LEAP. For those not in law enforcement, a further explanation is in order. Allow me to describe why active duty cops generally do not speak out publicly regarding the harm from drug prohibition, even when they know it is wrong. Let us begin with the viewpoint of your average person in law enforcement."

Prescribing Cannabis for Harm Reduction. [Harm Reduct J. 2012] - PubMed - NCBI: "Abstract
ABSTRACT: Neuropathic pain affects between 5% and 10% of the US population and can be refractory to treatment. Opioids may be recommended as a second-line pharmacotherapy but have risks including overdose and death. Cannabis has been shown to be effective for treating nerve pain without the risk of fatal poisoning. The author suggests that physicians who treat neuropathic pain with opioids should evaluate their patients for a trial of cannabis and prescribe it when appropriate prior to using opioids. This harm reduction strategy may reduce the morbidity and mortality rates associated with prescription pain medications."

Kansas House To Consider Medical Marijuana Bill
Kansas House To Consider Medical Marijuana Bill: "Tuesday, January 17, 2012
A bill that would legalize the use and sale of marijuana for medical conditions will go before a Kansas House of Representatives committee later this month.
House Bill 2330 would establish the Cannabis Compassion and Care Act which would allow patients of certain debilitating medical conditions to use marijuana legally. Patients would issued identification cards and the drug would be sold at registered businesses.
Fifteen other states have legalized medical marijuana. Supporters of the bill say marijuana is a proven natural medication for those with many diseases, including glaucoma, cancer, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, Crohn's disease and multiple sclerosis. They say the bill would also bring needed revenue into the state.
A hearing for HB 2330 is scheduled before House Health and Human Services Committee on January 24."

Cannabis & Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV): "The human immunodeficiency virus is a retrovirus that invades cells in the human immune system, making it highly susceptible to infectious diseases. According to the World Health Organization, over 500,000 Americans have died from HIV/AIDS and over one million US citizens are living with the disease.
Survey data indicates that cannabis is used by as many one in three North American patients with HIV/AIDS to treat symptoms of the disease as well as the side-effects of various antiretroviral medications.[1-4] One recent study reported that more than 60 percent of HIV/AIDS patients self-identify as "medical cannabis users."[5] Patients living with HIV/AIDS most frequently report using cannabis to counter symptoms of anxiety, appetite loss and nausea, and at least one study has reported that patients who use cannabis therapeutically are 3.3 times more likely to adhere to their antiretroviral therapy regimens than non-cannabis users.[6]
Clinical trial data indicates that cannabis use does not adversely impact CD4 and CD8 T cell counts[7-8] and may even improve immune function.[9-10]"

Legislature-approved bill that would legalize medical marijuana | NJ.com: "TRENTON -- The bill legalizing medical marijuana, which was passed by the New Jersey Legislature today, will go into effect six months after Gov. Jon Corzine signs it, as he promised to do before he leaves office Tuesday. New Jersey will become the 14th state to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes, and each state’s laws have their own idiosyncrasies.
Until medical marijuana becomes legal here, the state Department of Health and Senior Services will face intense lobbying from advocacy groups as it outlines a wide range of rules, such as where marijuana can be grown in the state, how much it will cost and who gets to distribute the drug."

States say it's time to rethink medical marijuana - CNN.com: "(CNN) -- Medical marijuana advocates are hoping state governments can succeed where their efforts have failed by asking federal authorities to reclassify pot as a drug with medical use.
Shortly before Christmas, Colorado became the fourth state to ask the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to reclassify marijuana as a narcotic in the same league as heavyweight painkillers including oxycodone. The governors of Washington and Rhode Island filed a formal petition with the agency in November, and Vermont signed onto that request shortly afterward.
All four are among the sixteen states and the District of Columbia that have laws on the books that allow the medical use of marijuana, even though the drug remains illegal under federal law. Meanwhile, federal authorities have asserted their power by raiding dispensaries in states including California and Washington."

Marijuana Use Not Associated With Residual Cognitive Decline Later In Life: "Thursday, 12 January 2012
London, United Kingdom: Cannabis use does not appear to have residual adverse effects of cognition or memory, according to trial data published last week in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
Researchers at the Kings College, School of Medicine in London investigated the prospective association between self-reported illicit drug use and cognitive functioning during the mid-adult years. A total of 8,992 participants who were surveyed at 42 years of age in the National Child Development Study (1999-2000) were included in the study.
Authors analyzed data on three cognitive functioning measures (memory index, executive functioning index, and overall cognitive index) when the participants were 50 years of age (2008-2009). Multivariable regression analyses were performed to estimate the association between different illicit drug use measures at 42 years of age and cognitive functioning at 50 years of age."

San Francisco, CA: Exposure to moderate levels of cannabis smoke, even over the long-term, is not associated with adverse effects on pulmonary function, according to clinical trial data published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
Investigators at the University of California, San Francisco analyzed the association between marijuana exposure and pulmonary function over a 20-year period in a cohort of 5,115 men and women in four US cities.
Predictably, researchers "confirmed the expected reductions in FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in the first second of expiration) and FVC (forced vital capacity)" in tobacco smokers. By contrast, "Marijuana use was associated with higher FEV1 and FVC at the low levels of exposure typical for most marijuana users. With up to 7 joint-years of lifetime exposure (e.g., 1 joint/d for 7 years or 1 joint/wk for 49 years), we found no evidence that increasing exposure to marijuana adversely affects pulmonary function.""

Wider Use Of Cannabis Therapy Could Reduce Prescription Pain Drug Deaths | Top Nug: "Physicians who prescribe opioid drugs to patients with neuropathy (nerve pain) ought to consider recommending cannabis as an alternative therapy, according to a peer-reviewed paper published online this week in the Harm Reduction Journal.
“There is sufficient evidence of safety and efficacy for the use of (cannabis/cannabinoids) in the treatment of nerve pain relative to opioids,” the commentary states. “In states where medicinal cannabis is legal, physicians who treat neuropathic pain with opioids should evaluate their patients for a trial of cannabis and prescribe it when appropriate prior to using opioids. … Prescribing cannabis in place of opioids for neuropathic pain may reduce the morbidity and mortality rates associated with prescription pain medications and may be an effective harm reduction strategy.”"

Abstract
The mammalian body has a highly developed immune system which guards against continuous invading protein attacks and aims at preventing, attenuating or repairing the inflicted damage. It is conceivable that through evolution analogous biological protective systems have been evolved against non-protein attacks. There is emerging evidence that lipid endocannabinoid signaling through cannabinoid 2 (CB₂) receptors may represent an example/part of such a protective system/armamentarium. "

Retracting a study doesn’t mean its conclusion is false « Drug WarRant: "Remember the RAND study that found that crime increased in areas after medical marijuana dispensaries were shut down? RAND made no causality claims, only correlation, yet the results enraged certain political entities, most notably the L.A. city attorney’s office.
After a lot of pressure, RAND retracted the study. In their news release, they said that the reason they voluntarily retracted it was that they “determined the crime data used in the analysis are insufficient to answer the questions targeted by the study.”
They did not find contradictory information, or any reason to necessarily doubt the findings, but rather decided that the amount of data was insufficient to make the conclusions solely based on that data. They claimed they intended to redo the study with more data, but we’ve heard nothing since.
What’s interesting, of course (though not at all surprising) is the way the retraction has been seen by some as a kind of proof that the findings were false – that, in fact, the closing of dispensaries were not followed by an increase in crime."

Pot smoking not tied to middle-age mental decline | Reuters: "(Reuters) - Middle-aged adults whose memories have grown hazy can't blame occasional pot smoking or other light illicit drug use for their forgetfulness, according to a British study, although experts warn heavy, prolonged use could harm mental functions.
The study, carried in the American Journal of Epidemiology, tested the mental function and memory of nearly 9,000 Britons at age 50 and found that those who had used illegal drugs as recently as in their 40s did just as well, or slightly better, on the tests than peers who had never used drugs.
Marijuana was by far the most common indulgence for the participants -- who were surveyed at age 42 about current or past drug use, then tested at age 50 -- with six percent saying they had used it in the past year, while one-quarter said they had ever used it."

Handicapping Marijuana Legalization in 2012: California to Win, Place, ... Show? | Legalization Nation
Handicapping Marijuana Legalization in 2012: California to Win, Place, ... Show? | Legalization Nation: "Registered voters casting ballots in the fall elections of Colorado, Washington, and perhaps California will have a chance to enact historic cannabis legalization in 2012.
A Colorado group said it will file 155,000 signatures with the state Jan. 6 — enough to qualify the group's recreational cannabis legalization and tax initiative for the November ballot. Similarly, a Washington group said Dec. 29 that it filed at least 355,000 signatures to get on the Washington ballot for November.
In California, groups need to turn in 504,760 verified signatures by mid-April. One California legalization group stated it has 10,000 verified signatures, while two other groups that are circulating petitions don't have any signatures to announce."

Medical Marijuana Could Reduce Prescription Drug Overdose Deaths
Medical Marijuana Could Reduce Prescription Drug Overdose Deaths: "Submitted by NORML on Jan 3, 2012
Physicians who prescribe opioid drugs to patients with neuropathy (nerve pain) ought to consider recommending cannabis as an alternative therapy, according to a peer-reviewed paper published online this week in the Harm Reduction Journal.
